Talk about a traffic jam! A runaway horse brought the M4 to a standstill, causing major delays and frustration for drivers. This unexpected incident highlights the unpredictable nature of travel and the challenges faced by emergency services.
National Highways reported the horse posed a “significant safety risk,” leading to the closure of a major UK motorway. The incident occurred near Newbury, Berkshire, causing headaches for commuters and anyone else trying to get from point A to point B.
The rogue equine was first spotted near Junction 12 (Theale) and Junction 13 (Chieveley) around 10 AM. This led to the closure of the busy stretch of the M4 in both directions. Social media quickly lit up with comments, some joking about the situation, with one person noting the long wait time: “55 mins later & there literally is STILL just 1 policeman just staring at the horse…”
But here’s where it gets controversial… The incident sparked debate about the best way to handle such situations. Was the response efficient? Could anything have been done differently to minimize the delays?
Fortunately, National Highways later confirmed the horse was safely removed. The M4 was reopened between J12 and J13, but the impact lingered. Heavy traffic built up from J11 to J14, stretching from Reading to Newbury. Delays were expected to persist as traffic slowly returned to normal.
