Is Sunderland’s Dan Neil heading for a January exit? It appears the talented midfielder could be on his way, with European giants circling.
Reports suggest that Italian powerhouse AS Roma is eyeing a move for Sunderland’s Dan Neil during the upcoming January transfer window. This news comes amidst uncertainty surrounding Neil’s future at the club.
Last season, the 23-year-old was a key player for Sunderland, making 48 appearances and even captaining his boyhood club. However, this season has presented a different picture. With new arrivals like Granit Xhaka and others, Neil has found himself on the sidelines, with limited playing time in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup.
But here’s where it gets controversial… Neil’s contract with Sunderland is set to expire at the end of the season. This means he could leave for free if a new deal isn’t agreed upon.
An update from ASRomaLive indicates that Neil is “ready to change” clubs in January, suggesting a move could happen sooner rather than later. It’s believed that Roma’s director of football might be seeking a “modest fee” for the player, given his contract situation. Journalist Angelo Papi has even stated that Neil is indeed a target for Roma.
And this is the part most people miss… Back in September, Sunderland’s sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman, expressed calmness about Neil’s contract situation, indicating ongoing discussions. Head coach Le Bris also mentioned the possibility of finding a solution for Neil to stay, but acknowledged that if a deal couldn’t be reached, the player might leave at the end of the season.
