Ethiopian Catholic Church Unveils Amharic Synod Document: A Step Towards Unity and Evangelization

Ethiopia’s Catholic Church Unveils Amharic Synod Document: A Journey of Faith and Unity

In a significant move, the Ethiopian Catholic Church has released the Amharic version of the final document from the Sixteenth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. This document, titled “For the Synodal Church in Communion, Participation, and Mission,” aims to unite and inspire the faithful across the country.

The translation was officially presented at a workshop held from November 10-14, 2025, in Mojo, within the Archdiocese of Addis Ababa. The event brought together key figures from the Church, including Bishop Tesfaye Tadesse Gebresilasie, auxiliary bishop of Addis Ababa, and representatives from various diocesan and pastoral offices, as well as catechists, youth, and laypeople.

The workshop opened with a Mass, followed by insightful presentations and discussions on the Synod document and the role of the faithful in evangelization. Participants also received training to enhance their understanding of the Synodal process, a key aspect of the Church’s journey.

Fr. Abraham Gebremariam, the National Pastoral Coordinator, highlighted the success of the workshop, stating that it effectively outlined future implementation priorities and reinforced the Church’s commitment to collective journeying. He emphasized the event’s focus on key agenda items, such as the launch of the Amharic Synod document, discussions on evangelization, and training sessions to spread awareness of the Synod’s message.

But here’s where it gets controversial… The workshop also addressed the need for better collaboration between the Pastoral and Development Offices, both integral parts of the conference. Participants were guided on this collaborative approach, with a specific focus on changes to school-sector guidelines. This aspect of the workshop sparked interesting discussions and highlighted the importance of unity and integration within the Church’s structures.

Participants left the workshop with a renewed sense of commitment to ensuring that all members of the Church embark on this Synodal journey together. They pledged to put this shared responsibility into action, working closely with the faithful to distribute the translated document and reach every Church community.

The Ethiopian Catholic Church has been actively involved in the Synod process since 2021, engaging at various levels, from the diocesan to the universal. This ongoing commitment showcases the Church’s dedication to fostering unity and participation among its members.

As the Church continues its Synodal journey, it invites all members to embrace this process and contribute to the collective mission. The release of the Amharic document is a significant step towards ensuring that every member of the Ethiopian Catholic Church can actively participate in this journey of faith and unity.
