Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy; here at UHCW we treat a range of orthopaedic and rheumatology patients with injuries and conditions that effect muscles, joints and soft tissues. As physiotherapists our ambition is to help our patients restore their function and reach their personal goals.
Physiotherapy treatment includes advice and education to help patients understand their condition and how to manage it. Your physiotherapist will create a tailored and progressive rehabilitation exercise program for you and may use other treatment options including manual therapy, acupuncture, taping.
We also offer a range of group exercise classes such as rehabilitation for a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), OA Knee group, foot and ankle rehabilitation, shoulder class, spine rehabilitation and pilates.
At UHCW we receive physiotherapy referrals from our consultant colleagues in varying departments including trauma and orthopaedics, rheumatology and paediatrics.
Integrated MSK service for Coventry
Overview
Health services across Coventry are coming together to provide a new way of delivering care for patients with a wide range of musculo-skeletal (MSK) conditions. The service will bring together elements from primary care, community and hospital services to improve access to services and help patient better manage their conditions. University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust and Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust are working collaboratively with the Clinical Commissioning Group and Primary Care Networks to design the new model.
What is an integrated pathway?
The aim of the new model is for patients to receive the right care, at the right time in the right place. The integrated MSK service will support people at all points on the pathway, starting with prevention of MSK conditions through promotion of healthy lifestyle approaches.
Why is the service changing?
An integrated pathway, where patients will have access to a number of healthcare professionals, including physiotherapists, can provide the best possible health and wellbeing outcomes.
What does the new model of care look like?
Many musculoskeletal problems are long term conditions that require comprehensive care and pain management strategies by a variety of health professionals and across a range of services. Patients can be referred to a multi-disciplinary hub to receive the most appropriate management rather than to hospital as a first option.
Where is care being delivered?
Pilot clinics led by First Contact Practitioners (FCPs) took place in a number of GP practices in Coventry. Following successful evaluation, including positive feedback from patients, clinics have now gone live in 29 GP Practices across Coventry.
What is a FCP?
An FCP is typically a physiotherapist who has the advanced skills necessary to assess, diagnose and manage musculoskeletal problems. They can access radiology, blood tests and other diagnostic tests to support the management of MSK conditions.
What change will patients see?
This MSK service places the First Care Practitioner (FCP) at the first point of contact. This means that a patient presenting to a GP practice with a MSK condition can see a FCP at their first appointment, often speeding up their assessment, treatment plan and any other investigations, if required, and referral, saving both time and resources for patient and primary care teams. When a patient contacts a GP practice for an appointment, they will be offered the option of seeing a GP or an MSK specialist.

Your Appointment
You will be contacted via letter to organise your first appointment. Currently your physiotherapy assessment will be completed via telephone (this will be from a withheld number) and subsequently either telephone, video or face to face. This will be discussed with your physiotherapist.
If you cannot make your appointment please let us know as soon as possible so we can rearrange and offer it to someone else.
If you do not attend your first appointment you will be discharged from physiotherapy, if you do not attend your follow up appointment you must contact with department within 48 hours to reschedule.
